Surfers, and especially surf coaches and surf schools, take part in the rescue and support of hundreds of people at sea every year - usually on an informal basis and with no record of occurrences. Recognising this reality and its importance, the Portuguese Surf Schools Association (AESP) and the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN) formed a partnership, giving rise to the SURF & RESCUE project, which establishes a link between surfers, surf schools and lifeguards all along the national coast.
